Description

What:

Families with children are invited to engage in active play, including hula hoop contests, basketball games, relay races and more. Free and healthy lunch will be provided to the first 100 guests. The Health Day of Caring aims to highlight the work United Way is doing in the Community to advance our 10 year goal to reduce childhood obesity.

Why:

Children are naturally drawn to active outdoor play, a form of exercise that promotes well-being and wholesome physical development. Play allows children to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain self-confidence. The positive benefits of outdoor play are many, and advocating for a healthy, active lifestyle is critical for a child’s success.

United Way has set a goal to increase the number of healthy Orange County youth by one-third by 2024. Educating families and especially young people about protecting their health, as well as the importance of developing healthy eating habits, lifestyles and skills, is essential in reaching this goal. In some OC neighborhoods, the childhood obesity rate is as high as 51%. We hope to target these at-risk and threatened populations to create a healthier Orange County.
